THIS RESOURCE INCLUDES

Learning Resources

Lesson Plans
First, follow these lesson plans or use the ideas to supplement your curriculum. There are 3 weeks or 15 lesson plan ideas to cover Geometry 2D shapes.

Shape Poster
In addition, use this poster to teach learners different two-dimensional shapes during your lessons.

Vocabulary Cards
Also, post these cards on the math wall during the unit to refer to as new words are introduced. Shape and geometric vocabulary are available to introduce to learners.

Lesson Plans

Shape Poems
To start, use these poems to introduce the shapes to your learners. The beginning of the poem shares attributes that can be elaborated in whole group. In addition, the ending of the poem provides real life examples of the shapes in our world.

Storytelling
During each week of instruction, use the storytelling lesson provided. To start the lesson, introduce your learners to a real-life situation that involves shapes. After that, use the materials listed in the description and have your learners help you solve the problem.

Shape Lessons
Each shape lesson comes with a read-aloud text to share with your learners. Next, introduce your learners to the shape poem. After that, have learners make the shape using playdough, WikkiStix or small manipulatives. Futhermore, at the end of the lesson, discuss the characteristics of each shape.

Interactive Notebook
During this unit, have learners complete an interactive notebook page after they are introduced to a new shape. Working together, complete the information and glue into the interactive math notebook.

Shape Exploration
Finally, end each week by exploring the shapes with groups or partners. After that, follow the directions and use the resources provided in this unit for these review activities.

Shape Snack
During this time of the lesson, share a snack each week together while reviewing the attributes of each shapes introduced.

Learning Centers

Math Center | Shape Clip Cards
During this center, have learners clip the shape of the real life object.

Math Center | Shape Sorting
With this activity, have learners sort the pictures onto the correct shape mat.

Math Center | Shape Matching
Together in partners, have learners go shape shopping by matching the shopping carts by their shape.

Math Center | Shape Pocket Chart
During this activity, have learners match the pictures to the correct shape on a pocket chart.

Math Center | Shape Write the Room
In this activity, have learners look around the room for shapes and draw the correct shape on their page.

Math Center | Shape Puzzles
During this center, have the learners match the shape puzzles.

LEARNING STANDARDS INCLUDED IN THIS RESOURCE

Common Core State Standards

Mathematics

CCSSK.G.A.2
Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.
CCSSK.G.A.3
Identify shapes as two-dimensional (lying in a plane, “flat”) or three-dimensional (“solid”).
CCSSK.G.B.4
Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/“corners”) and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length).
CCSSK.G.B.5
Model shapes in the world by building shapes from components (e.g., sticks and clay balls) and drawing shapes.

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills

TEKSMA.K.6.A
Geometry and measurement. During this study, the student applies mathematical process standards to analyze attributes of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional solids to develop generalizations about their properties. The student is expected to: identify two-dimensional shapes, including circles, triangles, rectangles, and squares as special rectangles;
TEKSMA.K.6.D
Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to analyze attributes of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional solids to develop generalizations about their properties. The student is expected to: identify attributes of two-dimensional shapes using informal and formal geometric language interchangeably;
TEKSMA.K.6.E
Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to analyze attributes of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional solids to develop generalizations about their properties. The student is expected to: classify and sort a variety of regular and irregular two- and three-dimensional figures regardless of orientation or size;
TEKSMA.K.6.F
Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to analyze attributes of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional solids to develop generalizations about their properties. The student is expected to: create two-dimensional shapes using a variety of materials and drawings.
