SORTING BY ATTRIBUTES: MATH ACTIVITY PACK

This pack includes whole group, small groups and independent resources for your sorting unit. For example, the activities included may be used for introducing, teaching, reviewing and assessing sorting by attributes. In addition, there are lesson plans with 3 mini-lessons, 2 center activities and an interactive page available for each sorting standard. Find more information about the resources included in:

THIS RESOURCE INCLUDES

Learning Resources

Sorting Poster:

During this lesson, print this sorting poster on a poster or simply print and laminate for your math wall. For example, this poster shows how to sort by color, shape, size and texture. Use the blank poster throughout the unit and add to each section as you introduce it.

Vocabulary Cards:

First, print the vocabulary cards (sort, attribute, same, different, color, shape, size, texture). Next, introduce the definitions and sentences throughout the unit.

Mini Lessons/Learning Centers

Same and Different:

During this 3 part mini lesson, introduce the concept of same and different to your learners. Have learners use 2 centers in small groups or stations to practice matching objects that are the same and finding the object that is different. Work together to complete the interactive page.

Sorting by Color:

During this 3 part mini lesson, introduce the concept of sorting by color to your learners. Have learners use 2 centers in small groups or stations to practice matching objects by color and sorting different colors. Work together to complete the interactive page.

Sorting by Shape:

During this 3 part mini lesson, introduce the concept of sorting by shape to your learners. Have learners use 2 centers in small groups or stations to practice sorting buttons and objects by their shape. Work together to complete the interactive page.

Sorting by Size:

During this 3 part mini lesson, introduce the concept of sorting by size to your learners. Have learners use 2 centers in small groups or stations to practice sorting objects by their size. Work together to complete the interactive page.

Sorting by Texture:

During this 3 part mini lesson, introduce the concept of sorting by texture to your learners. Have learners use 2 centers in small groups or stations to practice sorting rough or smooth and hard or soft. Work together to complete the interactive page.

Sorting by Attributes:

At the end of the lessons, use the center provided to practice sorting by color, shape, size and text. Learners may use the printable for an assessment or extra practice.

LEARNING STANDARDS INCLUDED IN THIS RESOURCE

Common Core State Standards

Mathematics

CCSSK.MD.A.1
Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Then, describe several measurable attributes of a single object.

CCSSK.MD.A.2
Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills

Mathematics

TEKSMA.MA.K.7.A
Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to directly compare measurable attributes. For example, the student is expected to: give an example of a measurable attribute of a given object, including length, capacity, and weight; and

TEKSMA.MA.K.7.B
Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to directly compare measurable attributes. For example, the student is expected to: compare two objects with a common measurable attribute to see which object has more of/less of the attribute and describe the difference.

TEKSMA.MA.K.8.A
Data analysis. The student applies mathematical process standards to collect and organize data to make it useful for interpreting information. For example, the student is expected to: collect, sort, and organize data into two or three categories.

Science

TEKSSCI.K.7.A
Earth and space. The student knows that the natural world includes earth materials. For example, the student is expected to: observe, describe, and sort rocks by size, shape, color, and texture.

TEKSSCI.K.5.A
Matter and energy. The student knows that objects have properties and patterns. For example, the student is expected to: observe and record properties of objects, including bigger or smaller, heavier or lighter, shape, color, and texture.
TEKSSCI.1.7.A
Earth and space. The student knows that the natural world includes rocks, soil, and water that can be observed in cycles, patterns, and systems. For example, he student is expected to: observe, compare, describe, and sort components of soil by size, texture, and color.
